Advice for safe food handling and storage
Safe food handling and storage is important for everyone, but particularly those at risk of complications form infection, such as the elderly, pregnant women and their babies.
Here is a list of some basic food hygiene and food storage tips
- wash your hands before preparing food, and between handling raw food
- keep all food covered
- use different utensils when handling cooked and raw foods
- wash raw vegetables, salads and fruits before eating fresh
- place all cooked food into the refrigerator within an hour of cooking
- store raw meat on the lowest shelves of the fridge to avoid them dripping onto the other foods
- keep your fridge clean
- keep your fridge temperature below 5 degrees Celsius / 41 degrees Fahrenheit
- strictly apply use by dates of refrigerated foods
- defrost foods by placing them on the bottom shelf of the fridge or use the microwave.
- thoughly cook all food that comes from animals, including eggs
- reheat foods throughly so that it is hot all the way through
